Teen Gets 14 To 28 Years For Beaver Co. Woman's Killing
BEAVER, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - A western Pennsylvania boy who was just 14 when he fatally shot a woman who told him to "get a job" when he tried bum a cigarette from her boyfriend must spend 14 to 28 years in state prison.
Marcus Velasquez, who is now 15, was sentenced Friday by a county judge.
The Beaver Falls youth pleaded no contest to third-degree murder last month for the shooting that killed 22-year-old Kayla Peterson on Dec. 8, 2012.
Velasquez and two other boys followed Peterson's boyfriend home from the store and yelled profanities after he ignored their requests for a cigarette. Velasquez allegedly shot Peterson when she confronted the youths as her boyfriend arrived home.
"They were all there," said Peterson's boyfriend Bill Bailey. "They all knew what was going down. They all get what they deserve."
Peterson had a 2-year-old daughter at the time with Bailey. Peterson was shot in the abdomen in front of their home.
"I think Kayla's up in heaven shining a little bit more because they were caught," said Bailey.
Friends say Bailey and Peterson's daughter was inconsolable after losing her mother.
KDKA tried to reach Peterson's parents for reaction to the sentencing, but were unable to reach them.
