Teams For 2012 Winter Classic Announced
PITTSBURGH (KDKA)- The Pittsburgh Penguins won't be playing in the 2012 Winter Classic but a team from Pennsylvania will be hosting it.
Sources say the NHL will announce that the 2012 Winter Classic will have the N.Y. Rangers taking on the Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The game will take place on Jan. 2, a day after the game is normally played.
The game is being pushed back because the Philadelphia Eagles host the Washington Redskins on Jan. 1 and the NHL doesn't want to go up against the NFL.
This will mark the second time in three years the Flyers are playing in the Winter Classic. They lost at Boston's Fenway Park in 2010 to the Bruins.
This will be the fifth Winter Classic for the NHL and second in succession in Pennsylvania.
For Penguin fans, the 2011 Winter Classic will always be remembered for when captain Sidney Crosby suffered his first concussion on that questionable hit from David Steckel, formerly of the Washington Capitals.
