Taxpayers Have Until Monday To File
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you haven't filed your taxes, you're going to get a break which may come as a surprise.
After all, everyone knows April 15 is Tax Day.
While many people have already filed, many taxpayers have not. A TurboTax survey found that more than 25 percent of taxpayers wait until the last week or so to file their returns.
But this year, the deadline is Monday, April 18, because Washington, DC is celebrating Emancipation Day, April 16, a day early because it falls on a Saturday.
Six years ago, this became a public holiday in Washington to recognize when President Lincoln signed a law to free 3,100 slaves in the nation's capital.
A three-day extension allows taxpayers in a crunch also to take advantage of free e-filing on the IRS website.
All you need to do is answer the interview-type questions and the software will populate the correct IRS forms. You hit a button and you're done.
Tax software will do the numbers for you, unless you have a complicated situation where you may still need some more personal tax help.
