Tattoos For Charity: Local Shop Inking People And Donating The Money

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Brothers Keeper Tattoo Shop in West View doesn't jibe with the stereotype of dark, dingy parlors of the past.

Owner Daniel Nodlanos and his employees work in a well lit, upscale environment, more typical of a beauty salon than a tattoo dive.

"That's kind of a stigma attached to tattoo shops," the owner says. "It's not really true any more. I feel most shops you go into are pretty nice. I think this is pretty nice. We put hardwood floors in and did a lot of work to make it look really nice."

He says Brothers Keeper gives back to the community. A week from Saturday, they'll hold a tattoo fundraiser for North Hills Community Outreach, which helps low income working families.

"They're called flash tattoos," Nodlanos says. "They're already made. And we can bang them out real quick. We're going to give all the money that we make that day pretty much to the fundraiser."

One branch of North Hills Outreach is Community Auto in Wexford, which makes donated cars available at low cost to low income people. The service coordinator says when it comes to flash tattoos, she's all in.

"I'm going to get a tattoo," Deni Rust says. She adds that the flash tattoos will go for $50 apiece.

"I have a sister and a niece who are on board to come with me on that day and do it," she promises. "And a couple of friends are going to come, too. So we'll see what happens. We're going to make a day out of it."

Four tattoo artists will work a full afternoon for charity.

"We make a lot of money at the tattoo shop," Daniel Nodlanos says. "So why wouldn't we?"

The "flash tattoo" fundraiser takes place Saturday, Aug. 2, from noon to 7 p.m.
