Port Authority Hopes To Have T Fixed By Steelers Game
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –The Port Authority is still working on the subway after a light rail car derailed Friday, but says T service is expected to be restored before the Steelers game Monday.
Three people were injured when it derailed between the Wood Street and Gateway stations downtown around 9 p.m.
Port Authority officials say service will continue to stop at Steel Plaza Station through Sunday and urge riders to allow for extra time when traveling.
The Port Authority will shuttle riders on buses between Steel Plaza and Allegheny Stations.
"Glad it happened on a weekend, rather than a weekday, because then it could have really would've curtailed traffic and hurt things," Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. "So hopefully it will be done and cleared up by Monday."
Authorities say they aim to have T service fully restored by Sunday night.
Workers are still trying to get the car out of the subway. It derailed after narrowly avoiding a collision with another light rail car.
"There were two trains and they were both on the same track, and they were coming towards each other and one tried to switch and I guess it came off the track," said Charles Heck, who was on board the other train Friday.
Other train passengers who witnessed the crash say they saw sparks coming off the train.
However, emergency officials at the scene say there were no explosions or fire.
The Port Authority is still investigating the crash and assessing the damage.
