Weather-Weary Community Cleans Sylvan Pool After 3rd Flood This Season
NATRONA HEIGHTS (KDKA) - Sylvan Pool in Natrona Heights has about 300 families that use the pool almost daily, but the pool was closed again Tuesday after flash flooding in the area Monday evening.
It was the third time the pool was flooded this season.
"It just started getting deeper and deeper, and the water just started coming in; it started to flood again. There is nothing we can do," said one community member.
Sylvan Pool is in its 51st year and has only flooded a total of four times in its history, so it's not clear what changes in the landscape might be contributing to the mess this year.
"The last time it flooded was 15 years ago; so obviously, it's not common. But three times in one season, there has to be something," said said another community member.
"It has been crazy because we did so much prep to get ready, and we were so ready," said lifeguard Erick Frantz.
It could take another 24 hours to drain the rest of the flood water, clean the pool with sterilizers, and then fill it with water, and that can take days, days neighborhood kids will miss out on swimming.
"It's kind of disappointing because I like to come here and swim," said Breea Bonnet. "This pool is like my childhood. It's my wonderland."
But so far this year, wonderland has been flood-land, and the hope is that this one is the last one.
