Police: Husband shoots and kills wife in Monroeville, dies by apparent suicide after SWAT standoff
MONROEVILLE, Pa. (KDKA) - Police said a husband shot and killed his wife in Monroeville and was then found dead by apparent suicide inside his home after an hours-long SWAT standoff.
Police were called around noon on Tuesday for reports of gunfire on Ashbury Court. A large police presence converged on Bayhill Drive and Ashbury Court and a SWAT team surrounded a house on Ashbury until about 4 p.m.
Police said the woman was found with gunshot wounds inside an SUV that had crashed into a house on Bayhill Drive. She was taken to the hospital but died. The medical examiner identified her as 45-year-old India Christian.
Police said a man came out of a home on Ashbury Court and fired at her car, hitting her, before the car drifted into the neighbor's garage. He then went back into the home and barricaded himself inside for hours, police said.
Officials tried to reach him and when they couldn't, they used technology to enter the home, where they said he appeared to have died by suicide. The medical examiner identified the man as 48-year-old Corey Christian.
According to police, the man and woman were married and lived together in the home.
"I saw the car pull out and I saw him run out after the car," neighbor Dan Scheuerman said. "From our angle, the bushes, I couldn't see what happened after that. So I saw what happened before. Then I heard bang, bang, bang and then I saw him run back in and the car come down the street."
Neighbors said the couple have multiple children.
"It's a large family, and there's a lot of people grieving right now," said Ed Vojtek, whose garage was damaged by the car.
Allegheny County's homicide detectives are investigating.
