Suspicious Item Sends Bomb Squad To Hampton Township
HAMPTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Hampton Township Police are trying to track down the person who hid a suspicious device, filled with fluid, in a neighborhood along Route 8.
The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called in after a man walking through a wooded ravine found the device concealed inside an old tire.
It happened near the intersection of Pioneer Road and West McNeal.
Jill Harrington, whose husband is local firefighter, came to the scene and talked to KDKA's Kym Gable.
"Of course, you worry right away, so I'm concerned," said Harrington. "He's a firefighter, and fire and police - they were called out and then sent back. Then, they were called back again."
There is a major petroleum pipeline that runs through the ravine.
Bomb experts moved the device to a safer location and shut down Pioneer Road before setting the package on fire, a routine method for destroying such devices.
"Their decision was to dispose of it by burning it off. They took some evidence off the device, brought it up. We have that evidence," Sgt. Tom Duffy told KDKA's Kym Gable.
"There was a lid on the top of the canister, a plastic lid, and there was a butane lighter taped to the top of it.," he added.
Sgt. Duffy describes the device as crude, but potentially meant to cause harm.
Hampton Township detectives are investigating.
