Violent Robbery Of Truck Driver Prompts SWAT Situation
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The violent attempted robbery of a truck driver in Penn Hills prompted a SWAT situation Wednesday afternoon at a nearby home in the East Hills of Pittsburgh.
According to officials, it started as a robbery attempt in the parking lot of a shopping center in Penn Hills.
In that parking lot, police say the trucker was sitting in his rig, resting before making the drive to Harrisburg later in the evening. Investigators say he was approached by an armed man who tried to rob him.
Initially, police said the truck driver had been shot in the head, but later said he was hit in the head with the gun instead. His injury is described as a grazing wound, and is not believed to be life threatening.
The suspect took off running after injuring the trucker.
A short time later, Penn Hills Police, Pittsburgh Police and the SWAT team surrounded a home nearby on Bracey Drive in the city's East Hills section.
"A few minutes later, we were told a possible suspect... came over into the East Hills community, which is in Zone 5, and potentially barricaded themselves into one of the houses here on Bracey Drive," said Pittsburgh Police Commander Jason Lando.
The situation wrapped up there just before 5 p.m. with two men taken into custody.
"We do have two people right now who were inside the house. They are being detained. At this time, they're not being charged with any crime," said Commander Lando. "Because this incident started in Penn Hills, detectives are going to be handling the investigation."
The men were questioned at the Penn Hills Police Department and later released.
The search now continues for the suspect in the attempted robbery.
