Suspect Sought After Overnight Gunfire On South Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh police are looking for a man who they say fired shots at officers overnight on Pittsburgh's South Side.
Authorities say the exchange of gunfire happened around 2:30 a.m. at McKean Street near South 22nd Street, not far from Station Square.
The two police officers reportedly didn't even have time to identify themselves when an unknown gunman opened fire.
"As soon as they turned the corner, and were getting out of their vehicle, that's when the suspect discharged his weapon at them," said Commander Thomas Stangrecki, of Pittsburgh Police.
Commander Stangrecki says the plainclothes officers were patrolling the area when they saw a large crowd of people, possibly bar-goers who were attempting to make their way home.
That's when officials say the officers spotted a man sticking a gun into his waistband.
"They saw the man up the street, in a crouched position, with the gun in his hands, discharging his weapon," said Commander Stangrecki. "One of the officers returned fire, and the man fled down Carson Street towards First Avenue."
No injuries were reported in the gunfire.
Police brought in a gun-detecting K9 to help locate evidence.
While the gunman was not found following the shooting, police say they believe they found his weapon in the back of a pickup truck.
"It just looks like the pickup truck was just parked there," said Commander Stangrecki. "And the suspect possibly just discarded the firearm there."
As part of the investigation and searches that took place overnight, police say they also made a separate arrest.
They say they found a large amount of heroin in a car parked in the area. Police say they took 18-year-old Rashaud Lewis of Pittsburgh into custody for questioning.
He is facing charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy charges.
