Suspect Injured In Mercer Co. Police-Involved Shooting
PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - State police in Mercer County are looking into an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday night.
According to police, a Pymatuning Township officer was called to a home on North Hermitage Road around 8 p.m.
Police in Pymatuning Township say they received a 911 call of a break-in at the residence. When an officer arrived, he heard gunfire coming from the home.
When the officer heard the shots, authorities say he forced his way inside. That's when a man inside the home immediately began firing at the officer. Police say the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The police officer retreated to his cruiser to wait for back-up; and the suspect then barricaded himself inside the home.
After a two-hour standoff, officers with the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team entered the house and found the suspect hiding in a closet with a gunshot wound.
Police say earlier in the evening, the suspect had shot a woman who was inside the home.
According to police, she was shot in the back through a door as she was trying to usher her three children to safety in the bathroom.
Police say both she and the suspect were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The 22-year-old suspect was released from the hospital Thursday, and was booked into the Mercer County Jail.
He faces aggravated assault, burglary and drug charges.
