Suspect In Elderly Woman's Death Waives Hearing
WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) -- One of the two men accused in connection with the death of an elderly Washington County woman last month was in court today.
David J. McClelland, 36, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on homicide charges in the death of 92-year-old Evelyn Stepko.
Stepko, was stabbed in her Coal Center, Washington County home on July 18.
Police charged her neighbor, 56-year-old David A. McClelland, who they say allegedly burglarized her home in the past. Police also charged his son, David J. McClelland, who is on leave from his job as police officer in Washington Township, Fayette County.
KDKA's Harold Hayes reports from court that the victim's family was emotional today as they saw the second defendant for the first time since he was charged. David J. McClelland had tears in his eyes as he was led to court.
The victim's family said they were not impressed.
"He will get his," said the victim's niece, Dolores Sprowls.
Meanwhile, McClelland's lawyer says he could end up becoming a witness for the prosecution and testify against his father.
McClelland's lawyer says his client had nothing to do with Stepko's death, but acknowledges there is evidence he was in possession of some of the victim's money.
David A. McClelland has already been ordered to stand trial in Stepko's death.
