Survey Breaks Down Favorite Halloween Candy State By State, Finds Pa. Likes Swedish Fish
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A state-by-state survey of Halloween candy favorites includes Pennsylvania's choice: a fruity treat called Swedish Fish.
We visit Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop in the Strip District to see if Pittsburgh is in step with the rest of the state.
Clerk Megan Bickert specializes in old-fashioned candy. The Halloween favorite here is no surprise.
"We sell a lot of candy corn around the time of Halloween," she says. "And they're actually in three-pound bags. And they come in individual little packages. That's our biggest seller."
They've also sold out of gummy body parts, ranging from eyeballs to fingers.
Despite a taste for Mallo Cups, customer Melanie Eisele has a different pick for Halloween best seller.
"I think it's Reese's Cups," she says.
"Mine's definitely the caramel apple lollipop," says Katie Dopkowski. "And I eat a lot of them."
They've also sold out their gummy body parts, ranging from "eyeballs" to "fingers."
On Wood Street, downtown, Katie's Kandy has just about everything.
"We have a thousand items in bulk," says owner/president Jon Weston. He also says he's sold out those gummy body parts.
The state favorite, Swedish Fish, is selling well, but Weston says, "My number one seller is my triple dipped malt ball."
Imported chocolate is also a year-round favorite. But for Halloween?
"They'll buy a lot of he bulk small fun-size candy. Or maybe Pal gum. It's an old school gum, and we have that."
And for the truly adventurous, he adds, "There's chocolate covered scorpions, and chocolate covered insects."
After all, it is Halloween.
