Sue Paterno: That Was Jerry Being Jerry
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A year after the death of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, his wife Sue has broken her silence on everything.
Sue Paterno has opened up about the suspicions, his firing, Jerry Sandusky, the hurt and all of the shame.
"So I wish it hadn't happened?" she said. "Yes. I've had so many sleepiness nights. I wish they could heal. I wish Joe could have prevented it, but he could prevent something he didn't know about."
Paterno told her side of the story for the first time to Katie Couric in a one-on-one interview.
Defending her husband and the legacy brought down by the Sandusky scandal , it ended her husband's football dynasty and raised questions about what coach Paterno knew and when he knew -- questions he never answered because he died two months later.
"To us, that was Jerry being Jerry," she said. "We didn't have that mindset that he was doing anything more than teaching them, working out with them and getting a shower. He worked out with them in the weight room. That had nothing to do with him being a pedophile."
Last week, the Paterno family issued its own report in response to the Penn State-commissioned Freeh report into the entire Sandusky case.
And the new report raises questions about how the case was initially investigated.
Sue Paterno said she has never been given the names of any of the victims in this case, but says she thinks of them.
"I'm praying for you," she said. "Every day, many times during the day, and I hope you can get the help that you need."
