Study: Pittsburgh Steelers Fans Saddest In NFL

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have nearly been eliminated from the playoffs for a second consecutive season, and a study out says Steeler fans are the saddest in the NFL.

Two marketing professors from Emory University published the study on fan emotions which was first reported by our news partners at the Post-Gazette.

The professors analyzed messages posted on Twitter after every game of the 2012 NFL season using an algorithm to categorize tweets as positive or negative.

In a two-day window following a Steelers loss last season, 33.1 percent of tweets from the Pittsburgh area about the team were positive, the lowest percentage of any NFL team.

The Emory study also concluded that Steelers fans are the second most "unstable" fans in the NFL, behind only the Oakland Raiders, a measure of the difference in their Twitter sentiment after wins and after losses.

That means fans are happier than most when their teams win and sadder than most when their teams lose.

Emory also conducted a recent study of best sports cities.

In the category of cities with three teams, Pittsburgh came in fourth.
