Joe Paterno Thanks Students For Support Outside His Home

STATE COLLEGE (KDKA) -- There were hundreds of students, some holding signs of support, gathered outside of Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno's home Tuesday evening and eventually the front door opened.

Paterno has been criticized by some for not doing enough to stop the alleged sexual abuse of boys by former Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

But there was no criticism from the crowd chanting, "We want Joe!"

"And I want you!" Paterno said while outside his house.

Paterno told Athletic Director Tim Curley about a report he received that Sandusky had been seen in the shower with a young boy.

Curley told Vice President Gary Schultz, but no one told the police. Curley and Shultz are charged in an alleged cover-up.

He told the students to pray for the alleged victims.

"I think we ought to say a prayer for them because you know … tough life when people do certain things to you," Paterno said.

Paterno expressed appreciation to the students for being out there.

"It's hard for me to say how much this means to me," he said.

"Joe has done so much back to the community, to Penn State," Kathryn Keydash, a junior, said. "We wanted to show that we're here for him in his time of need."
