Strip District Ice Cream Parlor Serving Up Pittsburgh Pride On A Cone
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There's something very delicious and very refreshing and very "Pittsburghy" happening in the Strip District.
It's Pittsburgh in a dish - or a cone - up to you.
It's Klavon's, the old-time ice cream parlor on Penn Avenue, with new-fangled flavors they're making in-house with a Pittsburgh twist.
Roberta Guido is enjoying the brand new "Black and Gold" flavor.
"Super dark chocolate, like really dark chocolate and butterscotch chips," she says.
Other flavors pay tribute to Klavon's Strip District neighbors.
One has chunks of biscotti and pistachio pieces, which is a nod to Enrico Biscotti Company, and another honors Wholey's, but don't worry, the fish are Swedish.
"We also have one that is based on Pittsburgh Popcorn Company, that is chocolate-covered popcorn with a caramel swirl," said Maya Johnson, Klavon's general manager.
Klavon's is a throwback. It was a pharmacy from the '20s to the '70s, and then was closed for 20 years before being reborn as an ice cream shop.
And its horizons have widened.
You'll also notice flavors imported from State College - from Penn State's famous Creamery.
Klavon's owner is a Penn State alum. He even took an ice cream making course there. Johnson did, too.
While they may love the blue and white, they're counting on their new flavors to stir some hometown pride.
They have all your traditional ice cream flavors there, too. Klavon's is located at 28th and Penn.
