Storms Knock Out Power To Thousands

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Fast-moving storms hit the Pittsburgh area Monday night, toppling trees and knocking out power to thousands of people.

While Duquesne Light had roughly 8,000 customers without service as of 10 p.m. last night, just about 1800 customers were still in the dark early this morning.

In Bellevue, lightning struck a house on Highland Place. The strike blew a hole in the chimney and set fire to the roof.

Mona Werner, 83, was home when the lightning hit.

"I couldn't smell anything, hear anything. [I] got my checkbook and cash and came out and noticed the smoke," Werner said.

Several viewers called KDKA-TV to report downed trees during the height of the storms. One tree nearly hit a house along Old Gate Road in Wilkinsburg.

Crews have been working to remove the downed trees to restore power to the affected customers.

According to a press release, the hardest hit areas for Duquesne Light were Churchill, Forest Hills, Penn Hills, Plum and Wilkins Township.

Residents without power are being asked to report outages by calling Duquesne Light at 1-888-393-7000.
