Storms Knock Out Power, Cause Damage
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Strong thunderstorms rolled through the area this morning. Some locations saw heavy rains, lightning and for others, dime-sized hail.
A lightning strike on Mount Washington knocked out power to some residents this morning. It happened on Hallock Street in the Duquesne Heights neighborhood.
According to witnesses, lightning hit a telephone pole, just missing a transformer, which then exploded.
A large tree fell on power lines, knocking out service and forcing the street to close.
"The sound was horrible, I thought my ears were going to split," said Pat Corona, a neighbor. "I saw it hit the wires, then it hit the tree and the wood just went all over the place."
Residents were told their power likely would be restored by 12:30 p.m. Hallock Street has been reopened.
The storms knocked out power to many residents across the area.
According to Duquesne Light, the outages are scattered. In their noon report, there were about 1,750 customers without service.
