Steve Blass Expects The Pirates' Bats To Start Waking Up
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- Pirates broadcaster Steve Blass joined The Fan Morning Show on Wednesday to pinch hit for Bob Walk in Walk's weekly segment with the guys, "Walk on Wednesday."
Blass admitted that he had no idea what the Pirates were getting with Francisco Liriano when he showed up to camp and was working through an injury. However, he feels that Liriano has been the individual story of the year for this team.
Blass thinks Liriano is a lock for Comeback Player of the Year, and feels that he could even win the Cy Young if it wasn't for Clayton Kershaw. Blass feels Liriano has been lights-out this season because he can throw three quality pitches for strikes.
Blass said that Gerrit Cole should be able to pitch in tonight's game without as much pressure as it appeared he might face, as Cole is not going to be asked to stop a losing streak or win a must-win game. That being the case, Cole can just go out and throw as the Bucs try to get the sweep tonight.
Steve said that "it ain't broke" when it comes to this team's offense and needing an upgrade. He explained that at the deadline, he would have told you that they needed to do something because he felt that the pitching would not hold up for a full year. But, now they have a real shot of doing that. He doesn't know that they need to add anyone on the offensive side of things because he thinks that they can get it done with the guys they have now getting hot.
"Walk on Wednesday" can be heard every Wednesday on The Fan Morning Show at 8:40 a.m.
