Steelers Struggle In 16-7 Preseason Loss To Redskins
LANDOVER, MD. (KDKA) -- The Steelers lost their first preseason game to the Washington Redskins, 16-7.
Isaac Redman scored the only touchdown for the Steelers on a 22-yard run in the second quarter. Shaun Suisham got the extra point.
Redman had five carries for 42 yards.
The Steelers were apparently still shaking off the rust from the off season. The Redskins dominated the field, passing for 312 yards and rushing for 140.
The Redskins also won the time of possession battle, keeping the ball for 39:25 minutes while the Steelers held on for 20:35.
Neither team forced a turnover.
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin says his team got outplayed in all areas.
"We'll go back to work and assess this performance and it needs to get better quickly," he said in his post-game press conference.
Pittsburgh held the Redskins to just one touchdown. In the second, Santana Moss caught an 8-yard pass from Rex Grossman on an 82-yard, 3:51 drive. The rest of their points came from field goals in the third and fourth quarters.
All four Steelers quarterbacks got playing time.
Ben Roethlisberger, who took five snaps, apparently tweaked his wrist. He put ice on it while sitting on the sidelines.
Byron Leftwich completed six passes for 70 yards. Charlie Batch, in competition for the No. 3 position, threw for 16 yards. Dennis Dixon completed one 29-yard pass and rushed for 17 yards.
Meantime, Ike Taylor broke his left thumb and is expected to be out over the next few weeks. Whether or not he needs surgery remains to be seen.
