Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston suffers season-ending injury, report says
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston reportedly suffered a season-ending injury in Sunday's season opener.
Johnston's knee injury will likely leave him out for the rest of the year, Ian Rapoport reported, citing sources.
Johnston limped off the field late in the Steelers' opener against the Falcons after his leg was hit during a punt late in the fourth quarter. A penalty was thrown against the Steelers on that play, leading to Boswell attempting his first career punt, CBS Sports reported.
The Steelers signed Johnston to a free agent contract earlier this year. Before coming to Pittsburgh, the 32-year-old played with the Eagles and Texans. He entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie after playing at Ohio State.
Rapoport reports losing Johnston will be a blow to Pittsburgh's special teams "in more ways than one," since Johnston is also kicker Chris Boswell's holder.
The Steelers beat the Falcons 18-10 Sunday after Boswell kicked three field goals, three of them longer than 50 yards. The Steelers were led by quarterback Justin Fields, who stepped in for Russell Wilson. The Steelers' starting quarterback has been dealing with calf tightness, which put his status in question leading up to the game.
