Steelers Participate In "Day Of Caring" At Local Senior Center

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Some senior citizens worked up a sweat with the Steelers today. It was all part of the United Way's campaign to encourage acts of generosity.

It was a celebration at the Vintage Senior Center in Shadyside as the seniors had some special guests to exercise with this morning, Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II and some players like Maurkice Pouncey.

"This is awesome, it is, it's fun to get in here and enjoy this time with all these other people and its good for us, too," said Pouncey.

There's no doubt, the class was a workout. Some players had a little trouble keeping up.

Kelvin Beachum had a lot to say about Pouncey's moves.

"He just don't have no rhythm, for real," said Beachum. "His rhythm is way off, he's not going to admit it, but you saw it."

"They seem to be enjoying themselves very much," Arlene Coles, of the Vintage Senior Center, said of the Steelers.

The event was part of the United Way's effort to encourage health, wellness, safety and generosity.

The nonprofit will host several Days of Caring throughout the month. This was one of them.

"Really just the message is for people to get involved and either participate in the campaign by being a volunteer or if they can contribute, contribute," said Rooney.

"We live in a very generous community and it's really important that we highlight the work that we are already doing," said Christy Stuber, of the United Way. "It's so easy to be generous, we can donate time or money or we can simply smile at each other and it just helps all of us enjoy the community we live in all that much better."

The Days of Caring won't only focus on seniors, but also children and struggling families throughout Allegheny County.
