Steelers Host Heroes At Heinz Field
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Some veterans who are back from serving in Iraq and Afghanistan were the Steelers' special guests Tuesday evening.
The event was called "Heroes at Heinz Field."
About 75 veterans had a chance to toss, kick and catch a football with members of the Steelers.
For the players, though, it was also a chance to say thank you to some brave men and women.
"They put their lives on the line for all of our rights and freedoms, and it means a lot to be able to come down here and tell them thank you," said Defensive End Brett Keisel.
Offensive Lineman Max Starks said: "We look up to them, and we're so thankful for them."
Retired U.S. Army Captain Anthony Kennedy was there with his daughter Jenna and his service dog.
Kennedy served in Iraq, but now suffers from violent nightmares. The dog is trained to wake him up during those nightmares.
He says this event means a great deal to him: "To be able to do something with this and to bring a family member, really lets them know that we are welcomed home and that people do genuinely care."
The event is organized every year by the Steelers and VA Healthcare.
