Steelers' GM Colbert Gives Insight Into Draft Decisions
PITTSBURGH (93.7 THE FAN)--The Steelers made nine selections over the seven rounds of the weekend's NFL Draft. To talk about the process, and the incoming rookies, the Fan Morning Show talked to Steelers' General Manager Kevin Colbert.
There were concerns about Jarvis Jones' 40-yard dash time, and health. Kevin tells us that neither of them are an issue for the Steelers. First, because his health issues have been cleared up and second because his 40 time does not translate to games.
"It is not a concern for us," Colbert said, "It was never a factor in his play."
In the second round, they took Michigan State running back, Le'Veon Bell. Colbert likes his size and running style, saying, "he will be able to create room for us, just with his physicality."
The team has had some success picking wide receivers in the third round. Kevin tells us about the speed of third-round-pick, Markus Wheaton, and how he plays a lot faster than many originally thought.
After trading to get safety, Shamarko Thomas in the fourth round, the team took a quarterback a few picks later. Kevin talked about Landry Jones and how he will fit in with the team behind Ben Roethlisberger.
"Hopefully, he retires as a Pittsburgh Steeler with two more championships," Colbert said of Roethlisberger. But, with Jones, they got younger at the position, and have a guy who could potentially become a starter down the road.
