State Trooper Injured In I-70 Crash In Rostraver Twp.
ROSTRAVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A state trooper is in the hospital following a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Westmoreland County.
State police say the accident happened just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesdsay on I-70 westbound just east of Exit 44 in Rostraver Township.
"Before he could get out of the car – thankfully before he got out of the car – he was still seated in the vehicle is when the other motorist came down the roadway and struck his car," State Police Cpl. Jeffrey Schaeffer said.
According to state police, Trooper Christopher Newman was helping the driver of a disabled vehicle along the side of the road when another vehicle driven by 51-year-old Maureen Yelletz, of Monessen, traveling westbound, collided with his state police vehicle and pushed it in to the back of the disabled vehicle.
"She struck the rear of his vehicle which caused the police car to spin counterclockwise and the driver's side of the police car then slid into the backend of the disabled motorist that was there," Cpl. Schaeffer explained.
The impact of the crash caused Yelletz's car to roll onto its side, and the she had to be pulled from the vehicle.
"There is no comment. I would like you off my property please," Yelletz said when KDKA's Trina Orlando went to her home.
Both the state trooper and Yelletz were taken to Mon Valley Hospital for observation of injuries.
"He's doing well. He's as can be expected, he's sore, banged up, he needs to see some more doctors and receive some more medical treatment, but he's in good spirits and he's going to recover which is good," Cpl. Schaeffer said.
State police say charges may be filed in the accident.
