State Police: Wrong Way Driver Crashes Into Another Vehicle On Parkway East
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- State police say three people were hospitalized after a wrong way driver struck another vehicle early this morning along the Parkway East, bringing traffic in the area to a standstill.
The two-vehicle crash, involving an SUV and sub-compact car, happened just after 4:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-376 near the Wilkinsburg exit.
"We had one vehicle that was traveling the wrong way on the Parkway East," said Trooper Robin Mungo, of the Pennsylvania State Police. "We're not sure exactly where she got on the Parkway."
According to state police, 26-year-old Carrie Mammay of Pittsburgh was traveling east in the westbound lanes when her Chevrolet Metro hit a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Mammay was taken to Mercy Hospital with severe head injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, 47-year-old Paul Tavella of Greensburg, and his passenger, 45-year-old Jeanne Tavella, were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
State police say they were being treated for minor injuries.
"With this being around the holiday season, there wasn't a lot of traffic, which is also a plus in this situation," said Trooper Mungo.
Mammay, an EMT, is expected to recover.
State police continue to investigate the crash.
"Right now, we're waiting for blood results to determine if we're going to charge her with driving under the influence," added Trooper Mungo. "We do have some reason to believe that that was the reason why."
The crash shut down the westbound lanes of the Parkway East in that area until 5:50 a.m.
