State Police Probe Fatal Muddy Creek Hit & Run
MUDDY CREEK (KDKA) -- A man from Belle Vernon is dead following a bizarre accident in Butler County; and now, state police say they are looking for a hit-and-run driver.
Accident investigators left markings on Route 422. They are the only traces of the terrible accident that happened there on Tuesday afternoon.
"There was already two ambulances here and a fire truck, and there was two more coming down 19 going towards the scene," said Jerry Stanyard, who was caught up in the traffic jam.
Allan Greenwood, a lineman operator for Bruce and Merrilees Electric in New Castle, was killed Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 422 and Currie Road in Muddy Creek.
"I saw the traffic moving and all of a sudden it just stopped," said Zac Schwartz.
Greenwood, a 29-year-old electrician, was moving a utility pole from a gravel parking area onto his work truck when a passing motorist clipped the pole causing it to block four-lanes of traffic about 2 p.m.
"The traffic was backed up past the bridge at 79 and down as far as I could see," added Schwartz.
Then, state police say as Greenwood was struggling to attach the pole to his truck to clear the road, a passing orange tri-axle truck also struck the pole with its tire.
The pole whipped around, striking Greenwood and killing him.
The driver of the orange truck kept going.
"He was a very nice boy," said Bob, a neighbor who lives near the Greenwoods in Belle Vernon. "I felt bad because it happened to him and I [knew] him, you know."
Greenwood's employer for seven years called him "a valued team member, saying that they were really going to miss him.
Anyone with information is asked to call state police in Butler.
