State Police: Girl Who Found Razor Blade In Gum Lied
MARION CENTER, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - State police say a 16-year-old western Pennsylvania girl who reported finding a razor blade in her Halloween candy and was treated for cuts in her mouth is now telling them she lied about the incident.
Troopers from the Indiana, Pennsylvania, barracks say the girl was treated Monday.
Trooper Mark McMahan said Tuesday the girl reported receiving the razor in a piece of bubble gum she received during a community event in the Marion Center area.
"Yesterday afternoon, the little girl was taken to the hospital after having attempted to chew the gum and receiving lacerations in her mouth from what appeared to be a razor blade," said Trooper McMahan.
However, state police now say the girl put the razor blade in her mouth after she began chewing the gum and all her injuries were self-inflicted.
The event where she got the gum involved 22 people who registered to hand out Halloween treats out of their vehicles, called Trunk or Treat, in the parking lot of the Marion Center School District's administration building in East Mahoning Township.
The event was hosted by the Marion Center PTA.
More than 300 children received treats, and nobody else reported that anything was tainted.
"There has not been any other reported injuries or incidents with the candy from that particular event," Trooper McMahan said.
State police say no one else was involved in the incident.
