Squirrel Hill's Main Thoroughfare Renamed To Honor Penguins' Rookie Goaltender
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The main thoroughfare in Squirrel Hill was named for Pittsburgh's fourth mayor, the honorable Magnus K. Murray.
But for Thursday only, it was renamed "Matt Murray Avenue," to honor the Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goaltender.
The idea was dreamed up by host Bubba Snider of FM radio STAR 100.7, and approved by the City Council.
"They've got big things they've got to worry about," Bubba explained. "Confiscating couches that are abandoned, they've got to worry that the trash cans are empty, because they've got to get ready for the post-game celebration."
"And then the ball rolled, as Bubba does, gets it going, and here we are today," added radio co-host Melanie Taylor.
They set out to post the cardboard sign themselves.
"I think it's pretty cool. It's showing support for the team," said one Squirrel Hill resident.
"It kind of shows the whole city is behind him, and they're behind the team," another agreed. "So, I think it's a really cool thing."

"I don't trust my balance," Bubba said.
He teetered at the top of a small ladder, trying to hang the street sign on a telephone pole.
A neighbor came to the rescue. But alas, his ladder was exactly the same size. They solved the problem by pairing the ladders, and working side by side.
Now that the nails have been hammered, the sign appears a bit tilted, perhaps emblematic of the San Jose Sharks downward spiral against the goalie whose name adorns "Matt Murray Avenue."
