Squirrel Hill Tunnel To Remain Open This Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Squirrel Hill Tunnel will not close this weekend with cold temperatures expected.
PennDOT originally announced that the eastbound side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel would close this weekend, as crews worked to make it bigger.
Crews are planning on continuing the rehabilitation project on the outbound bridge on Commercial Street, as well as working to add another 15 inches of clearance, so that the tunnels' height will go from 13 feet 6 inches to 14 feet 9 inches.
However, PennDOT is expected to close the tunnel next month on April 5 – 8, April 19 – 20 and April 26 – 29. Those closures could also change pending weather.
The work is part of an almost $50 million project, which aims to make many updates to the tunnel, including ventilation, water line, tile and structural repairs.
