Squirrel Hill Tunnel Closure To Delay Parkway Traffic
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Expect delays, as the outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed again this weekend.
PennDOT announced that the outbound side of the tunnel will close starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday. Motorists are advised to expect significant delays on the Parkway East.
Crews are continuing to restore the tunnel and replace concrete slabs inside of it, as well as test ventilation and install an "Over Height Truck Detection System."
Signs will be posted for detours, which will merge traffic into a single lane at the Squirrel Hill/Homestead interchange.
Below is PennDOT's suggested daytime detour (from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.):
- Exit at Squirrel Hill (Exit 74)
- Make left onto Forward Avenue
- Continue taking slight right and stay on Forward Avenue
- Left onto Beechwood Boulevard
- Right onto Forbes Avenue
- Right onto South Braddock Avenue
- End detour at outbound Parkway East on-ramp
Night detour (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.):
- Exit at Squirrel Hill (Exit 74)
- Make left onto Forward Avenue
- Continue slight left/straight onto Murray Avenue
- Right onto Forbes Avenue
- Right onto South Braddock Avenue
- End detour at outbound Parkway East on-ramp
The construction is part of a nearly $50 million rehabilitation project to update the Squirrel Hill Tunnels. Work is expected to be completed by early next summer.
