Sporting News Names Liriano As NL Comeback Player Of The Year
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Francisco Liriano dazzled for the Pirates this season and is being rewarded for his efforts.
According to the Sporting News' website, Liriano has been selected as their 2013 National League Comeback Player of the Year.
The 29-year-old signed with the Pirates before the start of the 2013 season and helped the Bucs get over the hump to earn their first winning season and playoff appearance since 1992.
Liriano was 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this season. He also struck out 163 while walking 63.
Liriano started two games for the Pirates in the playoffs and went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP.
In the winner-take-all Wild Card Game against the Cincinnati Reds, Liriano pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five.
Liriano also pitched Game 2 of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals. In that game, he went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits and also fanned five. The Pirates went on to win the game 5-3.
The Sporting News also named Mariano Rivera as the American League Comeback Player of the Year.
