Spirit Of Giving Tuesday Hopes To Encourage Charitable Acts
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally a big weekend for retailers, and now, non-profits are hoping to cash in, too.
It's call "Giving Tuesday."
Organizers are hoping it will follow in the footsteps of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
More than 8,000 organizations are on board nationwide.
"We're sending out email blasts and newsletters and things like that," said David Tobiczyk, of Goodwill of SWPA. "We've also arranged a number of teams – friends and employees of Goodwill – that are reaching out to others, asking them to be part of it."
In Pittsburgh, Goodwill, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the National Aviary have all joined in.
"Every dollar that we make in a store helps our mission to help people get jobs, people with employment barriers to help them get the education and job training they need to move into the workforce," said Tobiczyk.
An online "hangout-a-thon" on Google Plus is being used to raise awareness.
Celebrities are "stopping by" to solicit donations.
There is no formal way to make a donation.
The idea is simply to pick your favorite charity and take "Giving Tuesday" as an opportunity to make a donation.
