South Side Residents Asking For Permit Parking Expansion
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - If you've ever been to Pittsburgh's South Side, you know parking can be a real hassle and the limited number of spots is driving residents to ask for permit parking.
Whether you're a resident of the South Side or a visitor, finding a parking spot is often a treasure hunt.
However, it could become even more difficult for visitors.
Permit parking could be expanded from South 10th Street to South 16th Street, which is something residents are applauding.
"I think it's a good thing. We have two cars, we have a family here and I think it's a good thing to have secured spots without all the bar traffic taking up our spots," Jeannine Hine said.
A public hearing will be held on the matter next week.
Days, times, and restrictions have not yet been decided, but Councilman Bruce Kraus said one stipulation that could come into play is extending permit parking until midnight, whereas others are only until 7 p.m.
It could leave shoppers, diners and bar-goers looking for spots.
Councilman Kraus acknowledges that and as they move forward, permit parking regulations will be tailored to fit the people who live there.
"It is clearly to benefit residents solely. So it's driven by residents with a lot of input by residents," Councilman Kraus said.
Councilman Kraus said there will be discussions about balancing the benefits between residents and shop owners. To help businesses keep customers coming through the doors, something such as a two-hour limit for non-permit cars could be allowed.
"The key to having a thriving business district is to not have cars sitting for six, seven, eight hours. You want short turnover times like two hours so that customers could come and go freely," Councilman Kraus said.
The public hearing is Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.
Councilman Kraus suggested that anyone, either for or against permit parking, should attend.
