Crews Battle South Side Warehouse Fire For Over 2 Hours

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) -- Crews battled a warehouse fire on the South Side for more than two hours Sunday evening.

It broke out just before 7 p.m. at a warehouse in the 500 block of Bingham Street, and it took crews almost three hours to bring it under control.

Pittsburgh Bureau Fire Chief Darryl Jones said it was a stubborn fire because the building was unstable, and he did not want to send any firefighters into the warehouse.

There was a partial building collapse, and there are indications the building could be a total loss.

The warehouse was full of various appliances, including stoves and refrigerators.

It won't be clear for some time what started the fire. It grew to three alarms, which means there were more than 60 firefighters on the scene throughout the hours they battled the blaze.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

"My understanding is the building was empty at the time the fire was noticed," Jones said.

Customers in the "Escape Room" next door had to be evacuated.

The fire was officially under control just before 10 p.m., but the work is far from over.

"We had to do a little bit of out-of-the-box thinking. We had to breach some walls so we could reach the seat of the fire," Jones said. "We're going to be here probably the rest of the night in case there's any flare-ups. The building is heavily damaged, so we're still keeping our guys out of there because we don't want anyone to get in there, start operating and moving stuff around and cause a structural collapse."

The fire department also requested that Duquesne Light shut off power in the area because they were concerned about powerlines being hit by water from fire hoses.

The power will likely be out for several hours.
