South Shore Riverfront Park Opens

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Mayor Luke Ravenstahl was flanked by developers as he cut the ribbon, officially opening South Shore Riverfront Park.

He says the park on the Monongahela River, near Southside Works, is a link to many Pittsburgh destinations.

"This is a $13 million investment in the South Shore Riverfront Park. It connects downtown Pittsburgh to the Hot Metal Street Bridge. It connects the South Side neighborhood and the South Side Works development to the river front."

Gesturing toward the steps carved into the hill side, Kyra Straussman of the Urban Redevelopment Authority says the park is also an amphitheater.

"You can see the seating for up to 2,000 people, ramping up towards the top of the park where you can see Hofbrauhaus. We hope to see a lot of performances here in the future."

A gate of steel recalls a time when the J&L Mill occupied the 3.2 acre site. Massive steel ingots were excavated during the work on the park. Now they stand as rusted monuments to those who worked so hard in that mill over a span of 140-plus years.

Future plans call for public boat slips on the Monongahela.
