Convicted Sex Offender From South Dakota Arrested At Pittsburgh Homeless Camp

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A sex offender who secretly left Sioux Falls, South Dakota was arrested Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
Gregory Davis, 58, is in the Allegheny County Jail, charged with the crime of being a fugitive from justice. That charge will have to be answered to before he is extradited to South Dakota, where authorities say he violated his parole.
Davis was convicted in 2006 in Davison County, South Dakota, on charges of child pornography, forgery and grand theft. He was released from prison in April of 2018, placed on parole and required to register under Megan's Law as a sex offender.
"We developed information that he was in Pittsburgh staying at one of the local homeless camps and they surveilled several of the camps, developed information that he was in this one particular one under the Liberty Bridge and he was taken into custody without incident," said Chief Kevin Kraus of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office.
It raises the question: why Pittsburgh of all places, especially during the winter time?
"He was born in the Pittsburgh area. For whatever reason, he lived in South Dakota for a period of time," said Kraus.
Davis has been wanted by South Dakota authorities since October and happen to come to a place where local authorities prioritize close watch on sex offender registration compliance.
"When somebody has absconded, who's on the run, especially in a different neighborhood, or different area of the state or country, as in other cases, we prioritized this one, put a full-court press on, and we're happy we were able to take him into custody," said Kraus.
As Davis awaits extradition to South Dakota, there is no chance of him being released.
