Sources: Alcohol May Have Had Role In Chase, Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- While officials are still investigating a police chase that ended in a violent crash overnight, investigators are trying to determine whether alcohol may have played a role in the accident.
Raymond Henderson, 39, of Verona, is in the hospital after the mile-long chase that started in the West End Circle and ended near a BP station on Saw Mill Run Boulevard.
Police say the incident began around 10 p.m. Sunday night when Henderson made an illegal turn in the West End Circle and drove off when police tried to stop him.
The Jaguar struck a guardrail and went airborne for nearly 15-feet before ending up nose first on the roadway.
"We heard a boom and then we looked outside and the car was a mess on the street," witness Dallas Duffy told KDKA.
The chase ended with Henderson at gunpoint. Firefighters treated him at the scene to help him breathe.
While he was reportedly taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition, officials say his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
While investigators are still compiling reports into the accident, sources tell KDKA that they are looking very closely at the role of alcohol may have played.
