Snow, Ice Make For Tricky Travel Conditions On Local Roads

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A combination of ice and snow made for some pretty tricky travel conditions on local roadways Friday evening.

Cars, like one that crashed in Wexford, were sliding and crashing on the slick, snow-covered surfaces.

"It seems like it's going to be getting colder, so it's going to lay more, so we're just trying to keep up with all the snow and that," said Ronald Filfinger, of PennDOT.

Even at 8 p.m., well after rush hour, traffic was still gridlocked for miles on the Parkway West after a Brink's armored truck flipped over near Rosslyn Farms.

That transition from rain to sleet to snow had drivers on alert and road crews in action.

While navigating those roads in the KDKA Mobile Weather Lab, we passed several salt trucks.

"With all of our trucks out right now, and all of our guys, and full complement of everybody on the road, the weather change, we should be ready for any type of weather that comes down," said Dennis O'Neill, a highway foreman.

Further north in Butler County, the accumulation was a bit more impactful.

Municipal workers and private trucks were trying to keep the hazards at bay.
