Drivers Advised To Use Caution After Snow Blankets Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The overnight snowfall that blanketed the area in white made for a tricky morning commute out on the roads.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of the area with an additional one to two inches expected in the Pittsburgh area and more to the north and east.
Many of the region's school districts either delayed the start of school or canceled classes for the day.
Meanwhile, PennDOT crews have been working around the clock since the snow started to fall on Tuesday.
However, keeping the roads clear with the constant snowfall and gusty winds has become a challenge.
Drivers are being warned take it slow and be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities.
KDKA's Ross Guidotti reports:
From the early morning rush and well into the morning, I-79 north and south was slow going. For one driver, Barry Clapperton, the commute had some scary moments.
His little red Honda veered off the roadway while he was on his way to work this morning.
"It's a good car, but in these kinds of conditions, it's just terrible," he said. "In the blink of an eye, I got cut in front of me, I hit the brakes, spun out and now I'm stuck on the side of the road."
Clapperton wasn't hurt, but he had some advice for other drivers heading out today.
"It's been hit-or-miss. In between Cranberry, Wexford it was bad, and then it got better and now it's really bad up this way; I'm heading north to work," he said. "Slow down, be safe today, watch where you're going and be careful."
