Snow, Bitter Temperatures Linger Across Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The lake effect snow showers and bitter cold temperatures are expected to stick around today, keeping the Pittsburgh area in a deep freeze.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for several local counties.
KDKA's Jon Burnett says the wind chill readings will remain dangerously cold today.
"These wind chill readings are going to be at or below zero all day long, so you're going to have to bundle up the kids anytime you send them out today," said Burnett.
The high is expected to stay around 20 degrees with more snow.
"The lake effect snow machine is still cranking. Some of you are getting snow and some of you aren't - that's the pattern with lake effect," Burnett added. "I expect an addition inch to two inches today in most locations, more north and east; and I expect temperatures to really not go anywhere."
As for the rest of the week, Burnett says he expects the snow to taper off but the temperatures will stay frigid.
"We're getting those brutal winds across Lake Erie, that's providing us with the lake effect snow showers that brought us a couple of inches of accumulation [Monday]. It's going to keep our highs only in the teens to near 20 degrees, a little better [Wednesday], but not much. Snow showers tapering to flurries though, no additional accumulation," said Burnett.
"Then, we do dry out with no snow on Thursday, Friday or Saturday but the cold air lingers, not quite as cold as today, but nothing to write home about," he added. "It may be January before we see 40 again."
On Wednesday and Thursday, he expects highs to stay in the 20s and the temperature could reach about 32 on Friday.
"Bitter cold air has really settled in over the continental U.S., the coldest since last January, and it's not going away any time soon," Burnett said.
