Skechers To Pay $40M Settlement To Provide Toning Shoes Refunds
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you want a body like Kim Kardashian, the government wants you to know that buying a pair of Skechers Shape-Ups is not going to do it.
The Federal Trade Commission went after the company for deceptive advertising, and now consumers are getting refunds.
They've been touted by big name celebrities like Kardashian as well as Brooke Burke. After they hit the market, toning shoes became a billion dollar industry.
Skechers promised they would tone legs, work your core and help you lose weight.
But the government says they don't, and has accused Skechers of making unfounded claims.
The company will now pay $40 million to settle the charges brought by the Federal Trade Commission.
Consumers will get refunds if they purchased Skechers Shape-Ups, Resistance Runner, Toners and Tone-Ups shoes.
The FTC settled similar charges with Reebok last year over its EasyTone and RunTone shoes resulting in a $25 million agreement to provide refunds.
Skechers disputes the charges and is pursuing additional studies.
The government says companies that make these shoes need to shape up their substantiation and tone down their claims.
