Significant Winter Storm Arrives In Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A significant winter storm will impact our region today bringing snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for most of western Pennsylvania through 6 a.m. Thursday.
Pittsburgh and the surrounding area can expect 3 to 6 inches of snow mixing with some sleet.
Points to the north and along the Interstate 80 corridor will be blanketed with 6 to 10 inches of snow by late Wednesday night.
Areas to the south will deal with more rain and freezing rain.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Greene, Fayette and Monongalia Counties because of the icing threat.
According to KDKA-TV's Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla said the worst of the storm has passed. The steady precipitation started around 2 p.m. and will continue to taper off over the next few hours. Most places have 3 to 4 inches of snow and another inch or two is possible.
The precipitation will become lighter and more scattered in the next couple of hours as energy shifts east toward the coast.
Otherwise, we can expect cloudy skies the rest of tonight with temperatures holding steady in mid to upper 20s
Winds will pick up this afternoon as well to about 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph at times, which will lead to poor visibility.
Thursday looks a little better for travel weather with morning flurries and highs in the lower 30s.
