Sidney Crosby records 20th straight point-per-game season with goal against Buffalo
Sidney Crosby has made more history as he skates toward the end of the 2024-25 season.
On Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres, Crosby scored a goal in the first period, giving him his 80th point of the season. Because Crosby can only play in a maximum of 80 games this season, Crosby has now recorded his 20th consecutive point-per-game season, becoming the first player in NHL history to accomplish the feat.
Crosby passed Wayne Gretzky to own the record by himself. Gretzky recorded 19 straight seasons with at least a point per game.
Only nine players in NHL history have registered 15 or more points-per-game seasons. Three of them have done so exclusively in Penguins uniforms with Crosby joining Mario Lemieux and Evgeni Malkin on the list.
A history-making season for No. 87
This season has been full of milestones for the No. 1 overall pick of the 2005 NHL draft.
Crosby's 24th goal of the season, which he scored against the New York Islanders' Ilya Sorokin, was his 1,670th career point, which put the Nova Scotia native in fourth place for the most points scored with a single franchise, passing Wayne Gretzky, who scored 1,669 with the Edmonton Oilers. Crosby now trails Gordie Howe, who tops the list with 1,809 with the Detroit Red Wings, Steve Yzerman, who scored 1,755 with the Red Wings, and Mario Lemieux, who scored 1,723 with the Penguins.
In early March, Crosby moved into the top ten on the NHL's all-time assists list, at the time, recording 1,050 assists, which moved him one ahead of Gordie Howe.
The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, the junior league where Crosby played two seasons before being drafted, announced in February that it would rename its Rookie of the Year award to the "The Sidney Crosby Trophy."
In November, Crosby recorded his 600th career goal against the Utah Hockey Club while also clinching his 13th calendar year with at least 80 regular-season points, passing Mark Messier and Alex Ovechkin for the third most in NHL history. The only players with more are Wayne Gretzky (16) and Marcel Dionne (15).
Crosby's first major milestone of the season came back in October when he reached the 1,600-point mark, becoming the 10th player in NHL history to hit the mark.
Crosby also has the most points among active NHL players.
