Ohio Walmart shooting: Gunman identified in Beavercreek store attack that injured 4
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A gunman injured four people before killing himself in a shooting at a Walmart in Ohio on Monday night, police said.
The shooting at the Walmart in Beavercreek, which is roughly 10 miles outside Dayton, injured three women and one man. The attack happened three days before Thanksgiving.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday night, the Beavercreek Police Department said that the shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Police said the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones of Dayton, walked into the store with a Hi-Point 45-caliber Carbine long gun and opened fire.
Police said they were on the scene three minutes after the first call came in at 8:36 p.m. Officers found Jones dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 8:42 p.m. Police said officers did not shoot at the gunman during the attack.
Officials said as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, three of the victims were in stable condition and one was in critical yet stable condition.
"I want to commend our dispatchers, officers, and fire personnel for their quick response to confront the threat and treat the victims within minutes of the first call," Acting Beavercreek Police Chief Chad Lindsey said in a release on Tuesday. "Our prayers go out to the victims and their families of this tragic event, as well as all those who have been impacted by the senseless violence that occurred last night."
The FBI, ATF, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and other local agencies are assisting with the investigation.
"Tragedy struck our beloved community Monday evening," Beavercreek Mayor Bob Stone said in a release on Tuesday. "In the face of adversity, the strength of our community shines through. I extend my deepest gratitude to our first responders, especially the Beavercreek Police Department and Beavercreek Township Fire Department, as well as all the collaborating jurisdictions whose swift and coordinated efforts undoubtedly saved lives and minimized the impact of this devastating event. Together, we unite in support and resilience during these challenging moments."
The identities of the victims has not been released. Police are working to identify the shooter's motive.
Police say they will release more information as it becomes available.
