Shell Could Break WPIAL Record Tonight
Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Hopewell running back Rushel Shell could make WPIAL history tonight.
If Shell gains 135 rushing yards tonight against Mt. Lebanon, he'll break the WPIAL career rushing record of 7,646 yards, set by Fort Cherry's Mike Vernillo in 1999.
Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Vernillo will be at Tony Dorsett Stadium tonight to see if Shell breaks his record.
Aside from the WPIAL mark, Shell is chasing a national rushing record as well.
The 5-star running back has rushed for over 100 yards in 32 consecutive games, which is seven games away from the national record.
Back in the 70's, a running back from Hooks, Texas ran for over 100 yards in 39 straight games. His name was Billy Simms, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1978 for Oklahoma.
The 5-11, 210-pound back should set the record tonight considering he's averaging 226 yards during this streak and has gone over 200 yards in 18 times.
Shell is also close to announcing his college decision, which will reportedly happen on October 14th.
It's believed that Shell is down to Pitt and Alabama.
Two weeks ago, both Todd Graham and Nick Saban were in attendance to watch Shell vs. Montour.
