Shaler Community Remembers Girl Tragically Killed By Father
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Shaler community opened its hearts and wallets to support an event called "Laps for Laurin."
Last year, 19-year-old Laurin Edwards was shot and killed by her father James Edwards who then turned the gun on himself.
Funds from the memorial walk will support the Laurin Edwards Scholarship Fund.
Laurin was a freshman at St. Francis University.
"I wanted to do something positive in her name," said Laurin's mother Charlene Edwards. "I wanted to look at something instead of all the negativity, look at something positive."
Laurin's mother and brother James were both injured during the rampage.
"She's still with us all the time, with us every day," said James. "We have our good days and our bad days, but we manage to pull through. Every once in a while we have a rough one, but we're standing together and that's keeping us positive."
But her mother and brother did not have to suffer through this tragedy alone. They received lots of love and support from the Shaler community.
"The support is just huge and not one person came with anything negative," said Charlene. "They always say they love Laurin, they love you."
Charlene says she talked to her daughter every day and she misses her dearly. She also offered advice to other parents.
"I always tell people, 'make sure every day you tell your kids you love them, kiss them goodnight, tell them you love them,'" she said.
