Storms Move Through Area, Leave Behind Some Damage

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Thunderstorms rolled through the area Sunday afternoon and evening prompting several watches and warnings to be issued for many counties across the region.

There were reports of hail, gusty winds and lightning as well as some damage, including in spots like Blairsville in Indiana County and in parts of Lawrence County where some flooding was reported.

While many of the alerts have been lifted, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Cambria and Somerset counties.

"You can see the development of that line as a weak frontal boundary is dropping through the area right now," said KDKA's Jon Burnett Sunday evening. "Watch how things just blow up as we got into the heating of the day, and that's the kind of activity we're going to see [Monday] as well with another chance for showers and storms.

"I think there will be less of one [Monday] because this front is going to stall out tonight, and then move north tomorrow as a warm front," Burnett added. "So, we won't have as much of a trigger tomorrow for these showers and storms, let's take the probability down to under 20 percent; but I still think you're going to have to be prepared to dodge a few showers and an isolated storm as you head through your Memorial Day holiday."

Burnett says tonight will be partly cloudy and warm with the showers ending. The overnight low will be a warm 68 degrees.

As for Memorial Day, Burnett says it will be hot once again.

"You're going to have to be prepared to deal with the heat," he said. "We are looking at highs easily reaching into the upper 80s, maybe low 90s. [The] warm front, as I mentioned, comes through tonight and then we'll see those temperatures just continue to soar."

In addition, an air quality alert is also in effect today.

The Pennsylvania DEP issued an orange air quality alert for Pittsburgh, Clairton and Liberty.

The orange alert means the air may be unhealthy for certain groups of people including children, the elderly and people who suffer from asthma or heart and lung diseases.
