Sen. Orie Trial To Begin Thursday
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Late Wednesday afternoon, Judge Jeffrey Manning issued a ruling that sets restrictions on the testimony of Pennsylvania Ethics Commission Director John Contino in the corruption trial of State Senator Jane Orie and her sister Janine.
The prosecution wants him to testify to support their contention that legislators such as Sen. Orie knew or should have known that various conduct was not ethical.
The judge ruled that Contino may not offer his opinion on what activity would constitute a violation of that law, but may testify about other matters relative to the Ethics Act.
Also, a juror chosen on Tuesday has reported a member of their family may know defense attorney James DePasquale, who represents Janine Orie. A determination will be made Thursday whether that juror will have to be replaced or whether they can remain on the panel.
Also, the judge announced testimony will be heard Saturday in this case.
The trial will begin Thursday.
